Why Slow and Steady Wins the Race in Social Media

A lot of the times, new business pop up and their owners are so excited about this new venture that they think they need to see quick growth on social media. This mindset may lead them to make some rash decisions such as buying followers or spending too much on ads. And it may look impressive to investors to have gained over 1,000 followers in under a month, but savvy investors know there's more to it than that. And the day-to-day consumer probably won't even pay attention.

Let's get this out of the way right at the front: Do not buy followers. No one knows for sure, but it's estimated that about 15% of social media accounts are bots. That's 15% of about 3 billion. So, if you had every bot on Twitter following you, it would bring your follower count up to about 450 million. Sounds impressive, right? It does right up until you realize that bots aren't buying your products or telling any real people about you. You could make the case that the high number of foll…

Juno Know What You Talkin' 'Bout

I wanted to do a post about the new movie Juno specifically addressing the possible controversy that may arise from a movie that addresses teen pregnancy. But whenever I think about conflict I tend to think in movie scenes, soooo....

INT. MOVIE THEATER - DAY
Anthony and Steve come inside from buying their ticket and look around at the posters. Anthony spots a poster for Juno displaying a geeky looking guy in a track suit and pregnant teen girl.

ANTHONY
Why in the world does Hollywood insist on making movies like that?

STEVE
Movies like what?

ANTHONY
Like Juno. Glorifying teen pregnancy like that...

Steve looks incredulous.

STEVE
You've got to be kidding me...

ANTHONY
No, I'm not kidding - do you think teen pregnancy is a good thing?

STEVE
No; do you honestly think that the makers of Juno think teen pregnancy is a good thing??

ANTHONY
Well, if they don't, then why make a movie about it?

STEVE
Because teen pregnancy is what's wrong in the movie! The conflict arises from the grievous mistake of teen pregnancy! They aren't glorifying it at all! They're just postulating on the way one family and one teenager would deal with the situation. At least someone is talking about this kind of thing - why isn't it you? Or do you live in a magical fairy land where that kind of thing never happens?

Anthony, clearly beaten, glares at Steve.

After a beat, in one motion he takes out a magic wand and waves it at Steve, turning him into a toad.

ANTHONY
That will teach you to question the will of God.

STEVE
Ribbit!!
