How Social Media Saved the World

It cannot be understated that we are living through a history-making difficult time. Hundreds of thousands of people are falling victim to a global pandemic and everyone is else either staying home or acting brazenly stupid. It shouldn't be surprising, though, that one of the upshots of all of this is that there has been a rise in meme-making.

First defined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 as a cultural idea that takes on a life of its own and is passed down through generations much the same way that genes are, the word "meme" has itself taken on a life of its own to define pictures made and passed around on the Internet that often lampoon various aspects of life. I don't think I've seen any new memes in the past few days that weren't about the COVID-19 epidemic. But this isn't the first time a global catastrophe has been made fun of in what could be described as a "childish" fashion. In fact, one of the memes I've seen compared the uptick in Cor…

Tampa Bay Startup Week 2019

I'm thrilled this year to be an official in-kind sponsor of Tampa Bay Startup Week! The Green Asterisk is in charge of creating blog content for the whole event this year. I, Steve, have personally been in charge of their social media for three out of the five years that they've been around and will more than likely seek this opportunity again in the future.

Tampa Bay Startup Week is a week-long celebration of entrepreneurialism in the Tampa/St. Pete area with over 100 events lead by the best of the best in the region where you can learn everything from how to run your business social accounts to how to find funding for your business and everything in between. This year, starting today, they're setting up camp in Armature Works, which is right across the street from Asterisk HQ!

I highly encourage anyone who has any inkling of an entrepreneurial mindset that they come over, take in a few talks, grab a Cuban at Hemmingways, and talk to me about running your social media. I'll be here pretty much the whole time Wednesday-Friday!

Even if you're not an entrepreneur, you're sure to be inspired by and learn something from the people who attend. (Also there are free snacks!)

It's the fifth year of Tampa Bay Startup Week and it's going on strong!
